FlyORO Concludes Hangar 51 Program with IAG, Exploring Operational Flexibility in SAF Blending and Distribution

FlyORO today announced the completion of its participation in International Airlines Group’s (IAG) Hangar 51 Accelerator program. IAG, the parent company of leading airlines including British Airways, Iberia, Vueling, and Aer Lingus, has been at the forefront of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) adoption. With over $1 billion invested in SAF as of year-end 2023, IAG is driving innovation and commitment toward decarbonisation.

Through this collaboration, FlyORO conducted a feasibility study aimed at building a robust and flexible SAF supply chain. Leveraging FlyORO’s patented blending technology, AlphaLite, the study explored innovative solutions for blending SAF at both midstream and downstream points in the supply chain. Together, FlyORO and IAG evaluated a range of logistics options - including shipping, pipelines, rail, and truck transportation - while also assessing terminal storage capabilities and seamless integration with AlphaLite.

Preliminary findings demonstrated up to 47% cost savings compared to existing solutions, highlighting the potential for substantial operational and financial efficiency gains, paving the way for a more resilient and adaptable SAF delivery network. Spanning the European and North American regions, the study focused on reducing logistics costs, increasing flexibility in SAF delivery to airports, and optimising operational efficiency, laying the groundwork for scalable SAF adoption across the aviation industry.

IAG is pioneering the creation of independent fuel supply chains for both conventional jet fuel and SAF. By taking direct control, IAG can enhance cost transparency and streamline SAF logistics. FlyORO’s AlphaLite technology aligns seamlessly with these goals, offering customised blending solutions that are easily integrable and adapt to IAG’s evolving SAF needs.

As the Hangar 51 Accelerator program concludes, FlyORO and IAG will continue refining the economics of SAF supply chains, engaging with key stakeholders, and validating blending capabilities at strategic locations. This collaboration is a significant step toward building a scalable SAF infrastructure that supports aviation’s transition towards scaling SAF adoption.
